Socotra is an untouched land where exceptional landscapes blend with pristine beaches and supporting biodiversity. From the legendary Dragon Blood Trees to crystal-clear lagoons, this island is unlike any other place I've visited.
If you're short on time, a Socotra 5-day trip is perfect to immerse yourself in its magic. This was my itinerary filled with surreal landscapes and warm local encounters:
Kick-starting the journey with an early flight from Abu Dhabi to Socotra, I stepped off the plane directly into the island’s rugged and untouched nature. Meanwhile, one of the local guides had already prepared for us a typical Yemeni meal. Straight after we arrived, our guides took us to a local's family where we had our first local meal. This was the best way for the first understanding of the Socotran culture.
There, we directly proceeded to Arher Beach, which is the most remarkable place on the island. As we ascended the dunes and drank in the scene, you could see a stark beauty of desert and sea meeting each other that was an amazing sight to behold.
After this, we drove towards
Socotra’s farthest eastern point where the Arabian Sea collides with the Indian Ocean in a mesmerizing dance of waves. This was the perfect place for observing the sunset and the rhythm of sky's color gradually changing.
We awakened to the sunrise of life and ate breakfast at our campground. Then we could select between two different things to do.
Some of us went in for snorkeling at Dihamri Marine Reserve, one of the prime places of Socotra. The fish were swimming among the corals and at times one or two sea turtles or even a leopard eel appeared. Since there was a dive master on hand to rent gear, even novices could with some confidence dive in the coral-packed underwater paradise.
The others set off on a moderate hike through Hoq Cave. Entering the cave was like a time travel experience as the huge stalactites and limestone formations inside it seemingly not touched by human beings in centuries, creating a kind of otherworldly beauty. Although it was somewhat creepy, it was also so captivating.
After the lunch at Arher Beach, we then headed to the Diksam Plateau in central Socotra, home to the famous forest of Dragon Blood Trees. Along the way, we made a stopover at Wadi Dirhur, which is a verdant canyon where palm trees and
Bottle Trees jut out of the cliffs.
The night was spent in a
campsite right under the Dragon Blood Trees: a memorable experience under a sky full of stars.
Going out from the mountainous area, we made our way to the village of Qalansiya on the seaside of Socotra, a place where fisher folks live their normal lives. Villagers mended their nets along the beach, and local kids played in the pathways.
Just outside town,Detwah Lagoon welcomed us, where the pure white sand and the shallow turquoise water color envelope the clean beach. It's a protected natural refuge for stingrays, puffer fish and many other mystically beautiful submarine creatures. I walked gently along the sandbanks and I couldn't believe how virgin the place was.
Inside a
secret coastal cave, we had our lunch while our guide gave us more information on the different ecosystems of the lagoon. By the time the sun was setting, we climbed a small hill to get a bird’s-eye view of the lagoon, as the sky transformed into a blend of multiple colors.
We woke up in the morning with a boat ride that took us to Shoab Beach, a secret paradise that is exclusively reachable by the sea. On the way, groups of dolphins appeared, riding the waves beside us and making the journey even more magical.
Shoab Beach was incredibly splendid—soft white sands, crystalline clear waters and not a single building in sight. We spent several hours swimming, sunbathing and simply enjoying the quiet. It is the place you should be if you desire a location that truly seems like the edge of the world.
Late in the afternoon, we moved back to
Hadiboh, the capital of Socotra. Though it is a small town with few attractions, it was exciting to go to the local fish market, look around shops and grab a fresh fruit juice before heading to our final destination:
Delisha Beach. Watching the sunset here on our last evening in Socotra was the perfect way to end the trip.
Before returning to the airport, I wanted to make the most of my time by taking a walk on the beach while the waves there were still breaking.
It was hard to say goodbye to such a unique and untouched place, but I left with incredible memories: snorkeling with sea turtles, hiking through ancient caves, watching surreal sunsets and sleeping under the Dragon Blood Trees.
With Socotra being a far-flung and almost undisturbed piece of land, setting up a trip there is very troublesome and challenging. Thus, that’s why we went for Arabian Wanderers for our trip, a decision we consider to be the best one we could have made..
What made our visit so amazing was the seamless organization of the trip, which was completely hassle-free. Additionally, the local guides were highly knowledgeable and shared fascinating insights about Socotra’s landscapes and culture.
They took care of everything for us, from the moment they picked us up at the airport to providing meals and camping gear. All we had to do was sit back and enjoy the trip.
Socotra's 5-day trip offers the best combination of adventure, relaxation and cultural immersion. The island looks like a different planet, from the eerie landscapes of Dragon Blood Tree Forest to the untouched beaches of Shoab.
The current time is the most suitable period for traveling to Socotra because massive tourism is not developed yet. Whether you are a lover of nature, a photographer or just a person seeking for a truly authentic getaway, this island will make sure you do not forget it.
